Say No To Diets

This is a time of year where we see a lot of marketing for DIETS. And by DIETS I’m referring to restricting calorie intake and/or consuming specific products and/or following a meal plan in order to lose weight.

Companies will tout all kinds of promising results and splash before/after photos on our social media feeds making us feel like WEIGHT LOSS is THE answer to our health and our happiness.

It’s relentless. It’s hard to ignore. It’s hard to know what to believe.

Heres what RESEARCH is telling us about DIETS:

  • Participating in a diet is one of the number one predictors of future weight gain
  • While you may lose weight in the first 6 months, the majority wont maintain it for more than a year
  • Weight cycling is MORE detrimental to your health than maintaining
  • The failure/compliance rate of diets is high
  • The average woman has tried a multitude of diets by the age of 45
  • Chronic dieting has been linked to low self esteem and depression

Instead of spending time trying to ‘pick the right one’ know this:

You can’t pick the right one if they all don’t work.

Instead of looking for the ‘answer’ in a diet, calorie target or magic meal plan:

Spend your time and energy on:

  • Getting clear on your VISION of health
  • Working on your RELATIONSHIP with health and self
  • Becoming more AWARE of your current health behaviours
  • Setting clear INTENTIONS to steadily and sustainably improve your health behaviours
  • Maintaining CONSISTENCY with your health behaviours over the long term
