My No 1 Recommendation For Women Starting Or Restarting Group Fitness

February 2, 2023

This past month I’ve been having a lot of conversations with busy mums who are looking to start or restart their fitness journey and heres one thing I recommend to all of them – MEET YOURSELF WHERE YOU ARE CURRENTLY AT!

Ditch comparisonitis and ‘the shoulds’

All too often I see women get disheartened by ‘comparisonitis’ and ’the shoulds’. They say things like…

  • Urgh, I’m so unfit
  • What if I’m the least fit person in the room?
  • What if I can’t do all the moves or keep up?
  • I’ve got so far to go to get back to where I was before [insert big life event here]
  • I used to exercise 4x a week
  • I really should exercise 4 times a week
  • I used to be able to keep up at Hiit training sessions
  • I really should get back into hiit training

This kind of thinking seriously hampers their health, and happiness and needs to take a hike!

Stop comparing yourself to past self, future self, or others.

Stop comparing yourself to what you were doing 6 months ago, 2 years ago, 5 years ago, however many years ago, and think thats where you gotta start for it to be worth it.

Stop getting bogged down in comparing yourself to where you want to be, and getting so overwhelmed in how far you think you have to go.

Stop comparing your journey to your BFF, your colleague, your neighbour of the woman working out next to you in the gym.

Meet yourself where you are currently at:

  1. Stop berating yourself about where you are currently at – it ain’t helping you!
  2. Figure out your ‘easiest in’. This will most likely be once, maybe twice a week. At a time that feels do-able, rather than feeling like a huuuuge stretch. Potentially doing something you know you’ll enjoy, or are familiar with, or can do with a friend. For mums in particular, doing something kid-friendly can be a HUGE advantage (but NOT bringing your kids can also be a HUGE advantage).

I talk ladies through this individually as part of their induction to our community and our classes. It’s also been a big topic of conversation with the girls doing out 6 WEEK KICKSTARTER.
