School Holiday Snack Inspo

March 26, 2024

Not sure if its just my kids but I legit feel like all I do is make and hand out snacks on School holidays! Pre-packaged snacks are super handy, and great for those grab and go occasions, but they can also add up to be quite expensive…. and don’t always ‘fill them up’ adequately hence they keep coming back for mooorrre…. urgh!

Here’s a few snack tips and some school holiday snack inspo to consider including on your shopping list – no complicated recipes included.

.

Snack Tips From Our Resident Nutritionist Sarah Moore

  • There’s no such thing as the perfect snack – you can literally snack on anything of your choosing!!
  • Snacks should ‘satisfy us’ not ’tease us’.
  • I encourage you to think of them as ‘mini meals’ rather than ‘bite sized bits of food’ (**GOOD TO TEACH YOUR KIDS THIS TOO**)
  • I recommend aiming for at least 2 food groups in each snack and trying to think of what your day is missing so far – often that’s veg and protein (ie. popcorn and nuts; yoghurt & granola; or celery & cheese: apple & peanut butter)
  • Include snacks in your weekly meal plan and shopping list
  • Keep a little list of potential snack options on your fridge. Visual reminders are super handy for tired or busy brains (hey Mamma I’m looking at you)
  • Get kids involved in packing their snacks
  • Allocate a snack shelf in the pantry or fridge
  • Encourage kids to put it on a plate and sit somewhere suitable to eat (ie. not always front of the TV), or serve in a snack sized lunchbox
  • Understand that hunger fluctuates. Some days kids need more snacks, some days they need less. Honour thy hunger signals.
